Microsoft released the consumer version of Office 2010 to retail

Ed Bott of ZDNet blogs about the “elusive” Office Starter Edition 2010, which most people haven’t heard about. Microsoft has allowed OEMs to pre-install Office Starter Edition 2010 on brand new computers that have Windows 7.
This Starter edition of Office 2010 only comes with Excel and Word and comes with the programs basic features. However, the Starter edition does include some ads though the ads aren’t as bad as people may think they are.
Of course, if you want to remove the “ads” in the Starter edition or get advanced features of Excel & Word, you will have to purchase a full version of Microsoft Office 2010.
Fortunately, Office Starter 2010 never expires. You can use it as long as you own your computer.
The Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview is a limited, invitation only program which will provide you with the opportunity to experience early, pre-release versions of Office 2010 which will include the following applications: Word 2010, Excel 2010, Outlook 2010, PowerPoint 2010, OneNote 2010, Communicator 2010, Access 2010, InfoPath 2010 and Publisher 2010.

Microsoft released the consumer version of Office 2010 to retail a few weeks ago, and according to NPD’s Weekly Tracking Service the results are mixed. Units and dollars are down from Office 2007’s initial two weeks of sales but are in line, and in fact slightly ahead of, sales trends of Office 2007 so far this year. This fact highlights the challenges for Microsoft going forward for Office. A strong product launched into a saturated market faces considerable headwinds. Even so, sales of Office 2010 in general have to be characterized as a bit disappointing during the first two weeks.
